“And here is the reality: women and millennials (two pretty significant groups) are saying ‘No’ to our current ways of working” Mary Portas, Work Like a Woman
Through coaching, a young CEO realised that the problem in recruiting the type of people that she needed to change her business was the lack of employment flexibility on offer.
The CIPD report, Megatrends: Flexible Working shows that whilst many people do benefit from some form of flexible working, a significant proportion are not given the option. The obstacles highlighted are negative attitudes from senior leaders and live managers that prevent flexible working from being adopted and the benefits realised. Quality flexible working can help businesses attract talent, improve job satisfaction and loyalty, reduce absenteeism and improve well-being. In this case, it made the business more responsive to change and drove up revenue.
The outcome was to move from:
- Working 9 to 5 to work anytime with core hours
- Work in the office to work anywhere with dedicated office time
- Input focussed to focus on outputs
- Climb a career ladder to create your own structure
- No voice to everyone a leader
- Relying on email to new collaborative technologies
- Hoarding information to sharing information
- Knowledge focussed to adaptive learning
The employment offering became flexible, responsive, attractive, agile and more FUN!
The business recruited some excellent quality candidates which enhanced the team, the culture and sales.
